Hello,
my name is Tobi from Frankfurt, Germany.
I visited Belgium recently and bought a Flandria Penny S from 1977 because I liked the style of this brommer.
Now I want to drive it, but it doesn't run properly. I think the carburetor is broken. It's a Encarwi Model S23F.
Now my question: Does someone here have a good complete carburetor of this type, which he wants to sell and is willing to send it to Germany?
Many thanks
Tobi |

Dear Tobi, Could you provide me some pictures of the carburettor? I have some spare parts available. Maybe you can repair it. _________________ "Details maken de perfectie, maar perfectie is geen detail" |

This is the only picture I currently have. I took it apart and cleaned it. It also seems to be complete apart from the air filter and air filter housing. As I had it apart, I noticed that the needle on top of the float was bent a little bit.
If you need more pictures, let me know. |

Hi Tobi and welcome to this forum.
the bent needle on the float surely is something to look after as this probably causes problems to stop allowing fuel in the carburettor and it probably starts leaking at one point?
I hope Rekord can help you out.
Please also share some pictures of your Flandria Penny. There's probably just a small amount of Flandria's in Germany. I was at Veterama in Mannheim for several years and took a Flandria Polo to ride around there and got many looks and questions from people who never heard of or ever saw a Flandria before. I'm sure you'll get a lot of questions too like: 'where did you get that??' |

Thanks for your message, Rekord.
I just can't send an answer, because the board gives an SQL Error back to me.
I've put my mail in my profile here, so that we can get in touch this way.
And I will share some pictures soon, but currently I don't have enough time to do so. |

So I have taken apart the carb and cleaned it again. It really seems like the float isn't working correctly because the needle is a little bit bent.
I have put it back together and the Flandria now starts and runs for about 10 sec, so I think that the engine doesn't get enough petrol. This could still be reason of the float not working, am I right?
Here are some pics of the carb:

You might want to check the bottom of the float chamber where the lower needle sits. If that small hole is clogged with dirt (a common problem which is often not noticed), it will not allow the floater to lower to a point sufficient enough to allow the required amount of fuel into the float chamber. |

I noticed that too. I think I have to put the carb in an ultrasonic bath, to get really all of the dirt out.
Do you have any other tips for tuning this particular type of carburettor? |

There's nothing much to tune or clean on these types of carburettor as there's no seperate idle circuit, choke circuit or needle in the throttle valve to adjust so they're very simple to adjust and clean. I presume you made sure that the gas runs sufficiantly from the tank itself? |

Yes, I got a new fuel tap and clear fuel line so I can see the fuel flow.
I noticed that a Piaggio Ciao carb has the same flange diametre, so maybe I can fit a new one of those... I have to try that idea in the holidays |

They do fit the thread size but they have this sort of bent copper tube that might give you some trouble to fit it. You can use one from a Kreidler or Zündapp, they are more likely to fit without any issues. |

Finally I got it to run and drive! I bought an ultrasonic cleaner which cleaned the original carb like new. Then I had a problem with the choke, but now it is fixed.
Here is the requsted picture.
